Crude oil is not a homogenous product. The U.S. continues to import and export crude oil because the viscosity of oil (measured by its API gravity) being light or heavy and its sulfur content being low (sweet) or high (sour) largely determine the processes needed to refine it into fuel and other products.

Why is China buying so much oil?

One of the reasons China has increased oil imports and refining capacity is to sell to other nations, particularly in Asia. According to Wald, “They’re finding that they’re making money producing products and selling it to Asia, in other parts of Asia, so it makes sense to buy, store, refine, sell.”

How many years of oil does Saudi Arabia have left?

Another top reason why oil rig jobs are dangerous is the frequency with which falls occur. Falls tend to be the result of slips due to water or oil on the deck/equipment, tripping over equipment or holes, a lack of proper guardrails, improper ladder use, and more.

What happens to Saudi Arabia when oil runs out?

A February report by energy transition think tank Carbon Tracker found that long before oil production falls to zero, Saudi Arabia would suffer a 44% shortfall in government revenues just from the decline in consumption over the coming decades.

What is oil made of?

What is crude oil and what are petroleum products? We call crude oil and petroleum fossil fuels because they are mixtures of hydrocarbons that formed from the remains of animals and plants (diatoms) that lived millions of years ago in a marine environment before the existence of dinosaurs.

A so-called fossil fuel, petroleum is believed by most scientists to be the transformed remains of long dead organisms. The majority of petroleum is thought to come from the fossils of plants and tiny marine organisms. Larger animals might contribute to the mix as well.
